Vietnamese and Czech Universities Collaborate to Host Drone Competition

The launching ceremony of the 1st International Drone Competition (Drone – Unmanned Aerial Vehicle or UAV) took place at Ton Duc Thang University (Ho Chi Minh City) on the afternoon of November 21.

In his remarks, Dr. Tran Trong Dao – Principal of Ton Duc Thang University, stressed that drones are modern technology widely used in the fields of military, transportation, agriculture, and logistics. Researching, designing, and manufacturing drones is a hot topic of interest to organizations, businesses, and startups around the world.

Vietnam Aviation Academy, Ton Duc Thang University, Ostrava Technical University (Czech Republic), Tomas Bata University (Czech Republic), and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education have signed an MoU to co-organize the competition.

The international Drone competition aims to give students the opportunity to put their knowledge of model design, programming, AI, image analysis, and teamwork skills into practical research. This is also a playground to expand research cooperation and form joint research groups on Drones in particular and science and technology cooperation in general.

In particular, students and graduate students of domestic and foreign universities are eligible to join.

At the launching ceremony, it was announced that the competition will be organized annually by Ton Duc Thang University, Ostrava Technical University (Czech Republic), Tomas Bata University (Czech Republic), Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, and Vietnam Aviation Academy as co-founders and sponsors.

The founding members also announced that the 2024 theme and competition rules will be “Navigate and drop – Find the target and drop the object.” The theme was designed to develop an unmanned aircraft system that allows the sensor module(s) to be dropped onto the target.

The first contest will be held in Ho Chi Minh City in June 2024.

There will be five targets, each with a diameter of 100 cm and increasing difficulty. The task will be to navigate the drone to drop an object onto a target from a predetermined height with the highest possible accuracy upon impact.
